Sometimes, You Just Gotta Break the Rules!

Four siblings lying across a bed smilingSnow day. . .again! I know some of you are thinking, what’s the big deal? Day off from school, some sledding and snowman building, and hot chocolate too; sounds like a good deal to me! Yeah, I used to think just like you. Unfortunately, that whole snow-play thing doesn’t last more than an hour folks. It’s freaking freezing out there, and the wind feels like knives on your face! So you and your brood end up stuck inside all day, all the while praying that the fighting doesn’t get the best of you.

Well, on this snow day tempers were running high (mine mostly), and we all just needed to get some energy out. So I stripped our bed down and decided to have a jump-a-thon! At first the kids were like, “really?” Normally, we run a really tight ship and rule breaking is not tolerated. But after a little encouragement and assurance that this was actually OK (at this special time), they each got up and jumped with all their might. Within minutes, all crankiness and tears were gone and replaced with fits of giggles and “my turn”! It was so fun to watch them launch into the air with huge smiles on their faces.

Cherub didn’t do a whole lot of jumping, being not quite 2 yet. She just kind of bounces right now. But landing on her bum brought a big smile to her face.

Even cherub got into the mix, although she hasn’t quite mastered letting her heals leave the ground when she jumps. Honestly, if there had been room for one more, I probably would have joined them.

Now this shot is priceless! Looks like Cherub was the smartest kid in the bunch. But boy did they have a blast!

This little activity only lasted about 10 minutes, but the mood-brightening effect on the kids and myself lasted several hours. I have to come up with more of these little “events” because I’m sure winter has a few more snow days in store for us. Who knows, maybe I’ll get out the cooking oil and see who can belly slide the farthest across the kitchen floor. Then again no, definitely not.
