What Happens at a Cake Smash Photo Session
It seems like the hottest thing in baby photography at the moment are “Cake Smashes” and other offshoots that use things like jars or baby food, pancakes, even pasta and tacos!
So I wanted to give you a little information about them to help you decide if this fun session is right for you and your baby.
When to do the cake smash session?
Cake smash sessions are usually done at the one-year mark and help celebrate that exciting milestone of your child leaving “babyhood” and entering the toddler stage.
Who participates in the session?
You can either have this session be all about your child – especially if you know your child will love their own time in the spotlight – or you can include the family. This can be a great time to update family portraits now that your little one is transitioning into a new stage.
What should baby wear?
I ask the family to have a couple of outfits for their baby to wear: something nice for more dressed up individual shots as well as some cute play clothes. Then we’ll plan on putting the birthday kiddo in either a onesie for the cake smash or just a diaper cover or pants for easy clean up.
What does the schedule look like?
We start with the “clean” part of the session first. I photograph all of the skills that your baby has mastered over the past year: pushing up on tummy, sitting up, crawling, standing and walking if your baby is walking already. If we are including family members in the photos, I’ll make sure to get photographs of everyone together and then some of baby with mom, dad and any siblings as well.
Babies tend to smile more when they are with people they love instead of everyone being on the other side of the camera.
Once all of the individual and family pictures are created, we set up the cake in front of a backdrop of your choice and then set your baby down to see what happens. You never know! Hopefully, it’s all smiles and fun cake smashing (or just tasting). But even when a baby isn’t thrilled with the cake, the photographs are still adorable and will make you smile for years to come. Their curiosity is equally as cute!
If you are interested in having a baby milestone session that includes a cake smash for your little one, send me a message. I’d be happy to tell you all about this amazingly fun session.
