How to prepare for a family photoshoot

Why Choosing a “Photographer Near Me” is so Important to Your Family

A few years ago, when we truly believed our family was complete, my husband and I decided it was time for family photos. We wanted what every parent wants, to freeze our kids in that fleeting stage of adorable and have beautiful images of all of us together. So I did what many people do. I searched, fell in love with a photographer’s portfolio, liked the pricing, and booked the session.

The photographer was about an hour away, but at the time, that didn’t feel like a big deal. Good photos are worth it, right? We loaded the kids into the car on a Saturday afternoon and headed to a vineyard for the session.

Almost immediately, things unraveled. The weather teased us with rain. The kids started bickering in the car. Then our two year old fell asleep. By the time we arrived, everyone was already on edge. The youngest had to be woken from his nap and expected to magically look happy and cooperative for photos. That did not happen.

That’s when I realized the mistake I’d made.

I had chosen a photographer based solely on their work and pricing. I never once considered the experience for my family. I brushed off the distance, thinking an hour drive wasn’t a big deal. It was a big deal.

When you search “Photographer Near Me,” Google isn’t just being helpful for convenience. Location matters far more than most families realize when choosing a family photographer. Yes, you should love their style. Yes, you should feel comfortable with them. And yes, they should offer products you actually want in your home. But having a local photographer can make or break the entire experience.

Had I chosen a photographer close to home, our session could have taken place in our backyard or at a park five minutes away. We would have arrived relaxed, not frazzled. The kids could have played instead of melting down. And that looming rain cloud wouldn’t have felt so stressful after spending an hour in the car.

Unfortunately, the travel didn’t end with the photo session.

Weeks later, when the images were ready, I had to make that same hour long drive again to view them in the studio. An online gallery would have been easier, sure, but then I would have been left guessing. No guidance on what images worked best together, no help choosing wall art, no chance to ask questions or request small changes. I likely would have ended up with a disc of images that sat in a drawer and never saw the light of day.

We chose a collection of photos we loved and placed a sizable order. A few weeks later, the call came. Everything was ready. I could pick it up at the studio.

Another hour drive.

At that point, I was done.

Every ounce of stress could have been avoided by choosing a photographer near me. And that lesson only became more important as our family grew. Babies and toddlers don’t travel well. Older kids have packed schedules. Parents are juggling everything. Convenience isn’t a luxury, it’s part of a good photography experience.

Eventually, we found a wonderful local photographer right in our town. Someone we return to year after year. Sessions are easy. The kids are comfortable. The service is consistent. And the relationship matters just as much as the images.

So learn from my mistake. When you’re searching for a family photographer, don’t overlook location. Choosing a Photographer Near Me isn’t about settling. It’s about creating a smoother, happier experience for your family and images you’ll love without the stress. That one small decision can make everything feel easier, from the first inquiry to the moment your artwork goes up on your wall.
